If you hadn’t heard of Qwen at the start of this year, it might be time to take another look. This AI assistant from Alibaba goes by “Qwen” overseas and “Tongyi Qianwen” domestically. Its growth rate in global markets over the past year ranks among the fastest in the entire AI industry.
Where does it stand right now? According to Exploding Topics’ June 2026 data, Qwen Chat pulls in about 28.2 million monthly visits, ranking 25th among global AI tools. AICPB uses a slightly different metric: Qianwen’s web platform logged roughly 44.53 million visits in June, placing it 10th among AI chatbots. On mobile, growth is even steeper — ElectroIQ reports that in December 2025, the Qwen app hit 18.34 million monthly active users in just two weeks, a 149% month-over-month jump. Whichever dataset you use, the conclusion is similar: Qwen has moved from a “Chinese domestic product” to a genuinely global AI tool.

Free is the first card, and it’s genuinely free. ChatGPT set the bar for what people expect, but the $20/month Plus subscription is real money for users in many countries. Qwen launched its core chat experience as free from day one — no trial limits, no nagging upgrade prompts. In Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, that difference is tangible. You open it and it works. No credit card required, no waiting for approval, no counting how many questions you have left this month. For everyday people just getting into AI, that’s a very low barrier to cross.
But free alone doesn’t explain it. The open-source bet is the real leverage. Qwen’s models are open source. That means developers can download them, run them locally, modify them, and deploy them on their own infrastructure. By late 2025, Qwen’s monthly downloads on Hugging Face had surpassed Llama, making it the most popular base model on the world’s largest open-source model platform. One number worth noting: over 40% of new fine-tuned models on Replicate and Together AI are built on top of Qwen. Developers globally have created roughly 180,000 derivative models based on Qwen. This isn’t user growth bought with ad spend. Developers are voting with their feet, choosing a foundation they find capable, customizable, and cost-effective. Reputation in the developer community slowly spills over to regular users.

There’s another advantage that gets overlooked: language coverage. Qwen3 supports 119 languages and dialects. That number sounds abstract, but in global markets it’s a concrete competitive edge. ChatGPT and Claude support multiple languages too, but their core user base remains concentrated in the English-speaking world. If you’re an everyday user in Indonesia, the Middle East, or Latin America, and you find an AI assistant that speaks your native language fluently — for free — what do you do? The answer is straightforward: you use it. Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America happen to be where global internet user growth is fastest. Whoever nails localization in these regions first captures the next wave of users.
That said, Qwen’s current ranking is still an order of magnitude behind ChatGPT. ChatGPT’s weekly active users are in the 840 million range, and Gemini has over 160 million monthly actives. Qwen’s tens of millions of monthly users still put it in the second tier of this landscape. Its challenges are real too: how do you turn developer-community buzz into a daily habit for everyday consumers? How do you build features people will actually pay for, beyond the free tier? Qwen hasn’t fully answered these questions yet.
So what’s actually interesting about Qwen making the global rankings isn’t just “another Chinese AI product going overseas.” It’s that they took a different path. Not spending heavily on user acquisition, not launching first in English and then localizing. Instead, they open-sourced the models and let developers around the world build on top of them. Then they used free access and multilingual support to catch the users that mainstream AI products hadn’t bothered with. Whether this path works long term is still too early to call. But it proves one thing: Chinese large models don’t necessarily have to go head-to-head with ChatGPT in the English-speaking world. They can find their own footing.
